Retroperitoneal Laparoscopy Course
The retroperitoneal approach is the hallmark of the urological surgical discipline. Richard Wolf Medical Instruments Corporation is offering an interactive teaching platform for practicing urologists to master retroperitoneal laparoscopic surgery.
This one-and-a-half day course will be held at Richard Wolf Academy Prima Vista (Vernon Hills, IL) and will be proctored by esteemed faculty—Dr. Walid Farhat and Dr. Lars Cisek.

BACKGROUND
With the kidneys in the retroperitoneal cavity, retroperitoneal laparoscopy is not only a viable, but also a versatile alternative to transperitoneal access. It avoids transgression of the peritoneal space, preserving the peritoneum and bypassing potential troubles born of prior surgery. There are a number of modifications to the approach and access, which have improved the surgical flow in retroperitoneoscopy. For instance, the prone position is becoming popular as a substitute to the traditional flank position, hence decreasing the risk and consequence of inadvertent peritoneal entry.
COURSE FORMAT
The course is one-and-a-half days of didactic lectures, videos, and a dry skills lab, followed on the second day by a live animal practicum. Each surgical station will have two attendees with a preceptor. The attendees will be paired according to their surgical skills and needs. A preceptor will be present throughout the live animal surgery, providing prompt feedback and a debriefing summary at the end of the course.
COURSE OBJECTIVE
The course will allow attendees to learn the nuances of a retroperitoneal approach in both flank and prone positions. Attendees will practice access in both positions and perform surgical procedures in both environments. Familiarity with access; surgical display of the anatomy; and steps for renal, adrenal, and node procedures will be provided. An opportunity to debrief and define pathways for the participant to transition this experience into clinical practice will also be available.
